ATTENTION INSTRUMENT PILOTS: AMS SIM is now available to maintain Currency!
Maintaining your instrument currency, the FAA requires the pilot to fly within six calendar months preceding the month of flight:
- 6 Instrument Approaches
- Holding Procedures & Tasks
- Intercepting and Tracking courses using navigational electronic systems.
The above can be completed in an FFS, ATD, BATD, or FTD provided the device represents the category of aircraft for the instrument rating privileges to be maintained and the pilot performs the tasks and iterations in simulated instrument conditions. A FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR IS NOT NEEDED
AMS is pleased to offer our newly acquired CESSNA 172 FAA approved Gleim Simulator (BATD) which will satisfy all the requirements above. No need to find a Safety Pilot to accomplish instrument currency in an aircraft. The SIM can be configured with the normal six pack or Garmin 1000. Unfortunately, the FAA will not allow a CFII to administer an Instrument Proficiency Check in the AMS SIM. That must be accomplished in the aircraft. The six- pack configuration has both the Garmin 530 & 430, while the Glass configuration has the Garmin 1000.
Safety Applications:
- Practice both Normal as well as Partial Panel Approaches (Sim can be configured for failures)
- Practice Basic Instrument Scan / Partial Panel Scan flying.
- Set weather conditions for instrument takeoffs, and approaches. (SIM has the capability to dial in any weather conditions)
- Practice approaches in mountainous terrain (SIM has over 14,000 airports and 90,000 instrument procedures loaded.)
- Going to an airport you are not familiar with? Fly the approach(s) at the unfamiliar airport plus fly to your alternate and fly the instrument approach at the alternate and gain confidence and peace of mind prior to executing the real flight.
Costs:
- Flying the AMS Sim is much less costly than flying the real airplane. The AMS SIM is $90/hr. Should you need a CFII for instruction, AMS can provide one at an additional charge. Ask the AMS Customer Representative who answers your phone call what the current hourly CFII rate is. As of 1 November 2024, the CFII rate is: $62.50/hour: To accomplish all currency requirements for one period, recommend you book a 2-hr. block time.
How do you sign up to utilize the AMS Simulator:
- Call AMS at 850-623-4151 and ask to sign up for the Simulator. AMS Rep. will take your name and will book the SIM for your time requested. Let AMS know if this is your first time utilizing the SIM. If so, AMS will provide an instructor to check you out in the operation of the SIM (no cost to you) and how to log your time for currency. Let the Rep. know if you need a CFII for refresher training so they can book one for you.
- Payment can be accomplished after the SIM with a credit card.
- IMPORTANT: Upon arrival please be prepared to show your FAA license with instrument rating and gov’t issued photo ID.
